If you can believe it, Captain America: The First Avenger came out on July 22, 2011.

Currently, Steve Rogers’ loyal buddies, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, are embarking on the post-Endgame world without the OG Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+.

Still, we thought it was only proper to pay homage to the movie that started it all. Let’s give The First Avenger its due fanfare by going through some fun behind-the-scenes facts!

1.

The very first Captain America comic appears in the film.

Marvel

Captain America #1 actually came out in 1941 in real life.

2.

The scenes with pre-Super Soldier Serum Steve Rogers had to be shot at least four times.

Scenes with the skinnier version of Cap required multiple shots — with Evans acting normally, with Evans acting in front of a green screen, with a body double mimicking Evans’ actions, and without the character of Steve Rogers at all.

4.

Captain America: The First Avenger was actually the fifth live-action version of Captain America.

Its predecessors include the 1944 serial Captain America, the 1979 television movie Captain America, the 1979 sequel to that movie Captain America II: Death Too Soon, and the 1990 film Captain America. This is Matt Salinger — son of famous author J.D. Salinger! — in the title role of the 1990 version.

5.

Despite how it looks in the movie, Evans and Stan are actually the same height.

Evans and Stan are both six feet tall, but post-Super Soldier Serum Steve appears taller than Bucky. The production team used camera tricks to give Cap his taller physique.

6.

Sebastian Stan originally tried for the role of Captain America.

8.

Krasinski’s wife, actress Emily Blunt, was also up for the part of Peggy Carter, but she turned it down due to scheduling conflicts.

Blunt had also been in talks to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2.

9.

Believe it or not, Chris Evans turned down the role of Captain America three times.

10.

Evans didn’t even have to audition at all.

11.

Evans was paid $300,000 to portray Cap in Captain America: The First Avenger.

13.

Laura Haddock, who plays an autograph seeker in The First Avenger, later appears in the MCU as Peter Quill’s mother in Guardians of the Galaxy.

On Twitter, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn joked that Haddock was Peter Quill’s grandma in Captain America: The First Avenger.

14.

Stan Lee has a cameo as a general in the movie, but he actually didn’t create the Captain America character.

He told MTV, “Growing up in the Army is a very specific thing. There’s a certain way these guys carry themselves, there’s a certain etiquette, a certain body posture, the way that they interact. So I went back and read the comics and watched a lot of documentaries on World War II. Band of Brothers was very helpful.” We love someone who does the homework!

16.

Still fairly new to the Hollywood scene, Stan was still figuring out how to pay rent even after the first Captain America movie came out.

17.

Hayley Atwell revealed that her favorite scene with Chris Evans was that swoonworthy kiss.

Obviously. She also noted that when she first saw Evans without his shirt on, she “impulsively just grabbed his boob.”

19.

And now, here’s some behind-the-scenes footage, courtesy of Chris Evans’ Twitter: Evans’ high school friend Jon, who acted as his “assistant” on set, wasn’t very impressed with him.

When I filmed the first Captain America in 2010, two of my high school buddies, Zach and Jon, were my “assistants”.

Zach got a lot of great footage.

Jon was unimpressed.
