The Gremlin spared fellow contestants from elimination by unmasking himself.

USA TODAY

Spoiler alert! This story contains details from the Oct. 14 episode of “The Masked Singer,” including the identity of the revealed celebrity contestant.

Ready for the (Group) B-side of the playoffs?

Wednesday’s “Masked Singer” narrowed the talent pool even further as five became four from Group B, which at the top of the hour consisted of Serpent, Crocodile, Baby Alien, Whatchamacallit and Seahorse.

Comedian Joel McHale returned for a second week in a row, to serve as guest panelist, dishing his suspicions alongside the show’s in-house investigators: Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke.

In addition to the clue packages, items referencing the challengers’ childhoods were brought to the stage.

Here’s how it all went down:

Serpent

Clues: We witnessed two croissant sightings in Serpent’s clue package, so it appears he’s staying carbo-hydrated; $2 also seems significant. It’s the amount in his account when he fell on hard times and it was shown on a poster at a retail store where Serpent worked while he was struggling financially.

After Serpent charmed with Maren Morris’ “The Bones,” a baby bottle served as his childhood clue. “This baby bottle should get your wheels turning,” Serpent said.

Guesses: McCarthy thought of “Private Practice” actor Taye Diggs, while McHale thought of another player from the Shondaland universe, “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams. Scherzinger, clearly seeing the light, or “the coming of the sun,” thought of “Back At One” singer Brian McKnight.

A pervasive theory around the internet is that Serpent is Leslie Odom Jr. He played Dr. Arbuthnot in 2017’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” which fits with the mannequin dressed in scrubs from this week’s package. And their voices do sound s-s-similar.

Crocodile

Clues: Crocodile revealed that when he presented his first paycheck to his dad, his pop swelled with pride and was moved to tears. As far as objects we should keep our eyes on, the package presented a flag bearing a skull and crossbones, a can of hairspray and a photo of a croc family reunion from 2014.

If Crocodile continues fun performances like his rendition of Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” it’ll be easy to get addicted to this contestant.

A crocodile piñata full of little dolphins served as his childhood clue. “I just cracked the case wide open, because this clue has an important porpoise to it,” he shared.

Guesses: Scherzinger envisioned “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert, while Jeong pictured “Are You Gonna Go My Way” singer Lenny Kravitz. McHale went his own way, guessing singer/actor Harry Connick Jr.

To us, Scherzinger feels the warmest. There’s no denying Lambert and the challenger sound alike. Also, in 2014, Lambert returned to “Idol” as a guest mentor, which might be what the family reunion is referencing.

Baby Alien

Will the stars align for Baby Alien? (Photo: Michael Becker/FOX)

Clues: Poor Baby Alien. In his young life, he said he’s “experienced close encounters with money-hungry sharks.” Also, what connection should we be making with a crown and a fire hydrant?

From Baby Alien’s performance of Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time,” it seems the star’s profession is something other than music, and that he might’ve worked with this week’s guest panelist. Regarding his childhood clue of a toy fire truck, Baby Alien said, “This particular toy is near dear to my hearts, but Joel McHale, you’re hot on my trail.”

Guesses: McHale went with his “Deliver Us From Evil” colleague Eric Bana, while Scherzinger was torn between comedians Sacha Baron Cohen and Jeff Dunham. Jeong suspected “Twilight” actor Taylor Lautner.

Personally, we’re stumped. But plenty of Twitter theorists have placed their money on voice actor Sam Riegel.

Whatchamacallit

Clues: Holding on to a bundle of colorful balloons, Whatchamacallit floated through the sky, beneath past a far-reaching golden staircase. He also made mention of his mom’s illness, which nearly stalled his career. “I wanted to be by her side, but she wanted me to continue the ride,” he said.

On “The Masked Singer” stage, Whatchamacallit looked like he was “shakin’ it for some paper” during his performance of “Money Maker” by Ludacris, featuring Pharrell Williams.

A children’s book titled “Hairy Tales of the Whatcha Fam” served as his childhood clue.  “I love a bedtime story, and I’m an open book,” the star said. “So, Ken, you should know exactly who I am.”

Guesses: McCarthy guessed New England Patriots QB Cam Newton, and Thicke thought of retired football star Terrell Owens. Jeong, in our opinion, had a guess that refs would label a “false start”: actor Armie Hammer. But at least Jeong has a guess, which is more than we can say for ourselves.

Seahorse

Clues: Denim shorts were highlighted in Seahorse’s clue package, as was the word “Fail,” and a broken heart that read, “A dream is a wish your <3 makes.” Five clocks were stopped at 9.

Seahorse wowed, belting out Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” Following that display of her powerhouse vocals, her childhood clue arrived: a blue balloon filled with colorful feathers. “All right, Nick. Light as a feather, heavy on clues. This should help you, not confuse,” she advised the show’s host, Nick Cannon.

Guesses: Thicke, again, thought of “I’m A Mess” singer Bebe Rexha, while McCarthy – clearly thinking “Havana, ooh na-na!”y – brought up singer Camila Cabello. McHale, in our opinion, hit the nail on the head, or put wings on a buffalo, with his guess of singer/businesswoman Jessica Simpson. And here is our Jeong-long explanation of why: Their voices do sound quite similar, and if it is Simpson, she’s finally getting the praise for her voice she deserves. Also, she played Daisy Duke in the 2005 flick “The Dukes of Hazzard,” which would explain the short shorts. She also has a daughter named Birdie, which makes us wonder if the animals gathered ’round the campfire in Seahorse’s first clue package were a reference to her family. There was a bird and what appears to be a stuffed newt; her son’s name is Ace Knute. Also, in this week’s clue package, the message on the broken heart is a line from a song in Disney’s  “Cinderella.” And Simpson tried out for “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” as a kid, but didn’t make it. *Takes seat.*

The elimination

How do you cheer up a Baby Alien who’s been axed from a reality competition? Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies perhaps?

Yes, Baby Alien’s journey has come to an end, but not before the panel’s initial guesses could be matched up against their final ones. McCarthy initially thought Baby Alien could be the original “Karate Kid” Ralph Macchio, but switched to comedian Nick Kroll. Jeong jumped from “Friends” star Matt LeBlanc to actor Freddie Prinze Jr. Thicke swapped his initial thought of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog for “American Pie” star Jason Biggs, and Scherzinger changed “Friends”-ly face David Schwimmer for ventriloquist Dunham. McHale stuck with his guess from earlier in the night, Bana.

That makes for zero correct guesses.

“You got everybody. What in the world? Everybody was way off!” Cannon said to the unmasked star, former NFL QB Mark Sanchez.

“We thought you were, like, some superstar comedian. … When did you become a puppet master? Did it mess up the quarterback arm?” Cannon asked.

“My arm kept cramping up here, and then Ken talks for an hour and a half,” the football star teased, adding the best part of playing his character was sharing the experience with his son.

“He knows the words to ‘Faith’ now,” Sanchez said. “He knows the words to ‘It’s Time,’ by Imagine Dragons. So we’ve been rocking out in the car. It’s been really fun.”

“Masked Singer” will be back with Group C on Oct. 28 at 8 EDT/PDT.
