Elliot Page is opening up about his previous relationship with Kate Mara.

The “Umbrella Academy” actor, 36, reveals in his upcoming memoir “Pageboy” (Flatiron, 288 pp., out Tuesday) that he and the “House of Cards” actress, 40, dated while Page filmed 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” according to an excerpt from the memoir published in People Friday and verified by USA TODAY. Page’s long-awaited memoir takes readers on a journey of his self-discovery as a young trans actor in Hollywood

“The first person I really fell for after my heart was broken was Kate Mara,” Page writes in his memoir. “She had a boyfriend at the time, the lovely and talented Max Minghella.”

In an interview with People, Page said Mara “has read the book” and that Minghella was supportive of Mara exploring her feelings for Page.

“I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can,” Page recalled Mara telling him, while speaking with People.

“This was right after I’d come out as gay and it was a time of exploration and also heartbreak,” Page told People. “I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that — I think a lot of us do this — who aren’t fully available. And the sort of safety in that and the highs and the lows and the serotonin bump, and then it goes away.”

Page also told People that he and Mara remain close, and the two went on to play lovers in the 2017 film “My Days of Mercy.” Mara married English actor Jamie Bell in 2017, becoming stepmother to Bell’s son with his ex-wife Evan Rachel Wood. Mara and Bell have since welcomed two kids together, a daughter in 2019 and a son in 2022.

“I think the love and care that we have for each other is it’s very own special thing,” he said. “Separate from the intimacy that I write about.”
