Michael Shannon is opening up about starring in “The Flash” alongside Ezra Miller, who was encircled in controversy much of last year.

In an interview with Vanity Fair published May 2, Shannon discussed filming the movie with Miller amid the actor’s multiple arrests and legal issues, a situation Shannon said is hard to discuss considering Miller’s transparency about their mental health.

“I thought Ezra was lovely—very kind to me when I was there,” Shannon told the magazine. “It’s difficult to talk about, but I always give people a lot of slack in this business, because there’s a lot of people in this business that have issues.”

Audiences saw a first look of DC’s “The Flash” during CinemaCon in April before the film’s June 16 release, which comes before the DC movie universe gets a reboot. The film centers on the Flash, played by Miller, who uses super-speed to save his parents, but in the process accidentally breaks the world and meets his 18-year-old self. Starring Michael Keaton as Batman and Michael Shannon’s reprised “Man of Steel” character General Zod, “Flash” puts a nifty superhero spin on a “Back to the Future”-type tale.

Michael Shannon says it's "difficult" to discuss working with Ezra Miller on "The Flash" amid their mental health issues.

First reactions: ‘The Flash’ wins raves at CinemaCon for ‘nerdy details’ and ‘big heart’

In August, Miller broke their silence and apologized about their string of arrest and abuse allegations saying they are seeking treatment for “complex mental health issues” and that they had been going through a time of “intense crisis.”

Shannon continued his reflection of his “Flash” co-star saying: “Some people have more privacy than others. Any time somebody is out in the spotlight getting picked on, I feel for them. Even if it’s warranted, it’s still a horrible situation.”

Last March, Miller was arrested in Hawaii for disorderly conduct, and was arrested again last April on suspicion of assault. In June, Miller was accused of grooming an 18-year-old activist by the teen’s parents.

Weeks before their public apology, Miller was charged with felony burglary in Stamford, Vermont, according to a Vermont State Police report published Aug. 8. Authorities dropped the felony burglary against Miller and the actor accepted a plea deal to avoid jail time for a trespassing charge.

Miller’s legal issues weren’t addressed during the Warner Bros’ CinemaCon presentation in April.

Despite the controversy, Miller has received praise for their role in the film. Collider.com’s Steven Weintraub tweeted that the star has “made a lot of mistakes but they are soooooo good in this movie.” And Cinema Blend’s Sean O’Connell praised “two outstanding performances” from Miller in “The Flash.” “It’s magical. It presses every button. I’ll see it 1,000 times.”
