This property, which has horse stables and a riding rink, is a few miles from Old Santa Susana Stage Road, used in the 19th century by travelers from Southern California to San Francisco. The road is now part of a state park in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains and is popular with hikers and horseback riders.

The home, which has a recording studio built by the seller, a songwriter and music producer who worked with Madonna and Leonard Cohen, is about 45 minutes from the Westside of Los Angeles and about the same distance from the beaches of Malibu.

Size: 3,169 square feet

Price per square foot: $441

Indoors: From the street, a driveway leads up the hill to a clearing occupied by the main house.

The front door is set in the middle of the wide, covered porch. It opens into a den with Spanish-tile floors and, like most of the main living spaces, log-cabin-style wood walls. A door on the left side of the room leads to the recording studio. To the right of the room is the main living space, which includes an open seating area with a wood-burning stove, a dining area and a kitchen with wood cabinetry and open shelves. The kitchen is divided from the dining area by a breakfast bar topped with granite. Just off the kitchen is a powder room with deep red walls.

On the second floor is an open space with vaulted ceilings and a window seat. To the right is the primary bedroom, which has a separate sitting room and an en suite bathroom with a soaking tub, a blue-and-white-tiled shower and a double vanity. To the left are two guest rooms connected by a short hallway; they share a bathroom with a combination tub and shower.

This building is on Mint Plaza, adjacent to the historic San Francisco Mint. Once a warehouse for Hale Brothers Department Store, it was converted into condominiums in 2005. The area is still a popular place for shopping, with the Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall across the street and smaller boutiques dotting Market and Mission Streets, two of the city’s main thoroughfares. The property is a few blocks from Yerba Buena Gardens, a two-block stretch of parks with an arts center and outdoor art installations.

The main living space is open, with a wall of windows facing the plaza. The floors are polished concrete; the ceiling and several of the walls feature exposed pipes and concrete structural details. Outdoor space: This building is surrounded by several others developed by the same company, and residents have access to the common spaces of one those buildings, including a roof deck with sweeping city views and a gym with various workout machines.

New construction is relatively rare in Guerneville, because of the area’s septic system and the limited amount of available riverfront space. This house, on the Russian River, was completed earlier this year, and has two south-facing decks with river views. It is about a mile from the center of Guerneville, which can be reached by car, foot or kayak. San Francisco is about a 90-minute drive, and the wineries of the Santa Rosa area are about half an hour away. Sonoma Coast State Park and Goat Rock Beach, a popular seal-spotting destination, are about 20 minutes away.

Size: 1,925 square feet

Price per square foot: $725

The open living-and-dining area has high ceilings, wood floors, a cast-iron stove and sliding-glass doors out to the deck. A marble-topped breakfast bar sets off the kitchen, which has a Viking range and a stainless steel farmhouse-style sink.

A hallway off the kitchen leads to the bedroom wing. The primary suite faces the river, with vaulted ceilings and a barn-style sliding door that opens to a bathroom with a glass-walled walk-in shower and a marble-and-wood double vanity. One guest room is currently used as a home office, with an en suite bathroom that has a porcelain soaking tub; the other, which faces the street, also has an en suite bathroom.
