This house, attributed to Sylvanus Marston, was built in 1927 in the French Normandy style and has had relatively few alterations over its life span. Mr. Marston’s architecture firm, Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury, worked regularly in Pasadena and was responsible for a number of structures in the area, including the former Vista del Arroyo Hotel, now a U.S. Court of Appeals building, the auditorium of Pasadena City College and the USC Pacific Asia Museum.
The house is a five-minute drive from two Pasadena institutions: the main campus of the California Institute of Technology and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens.
Size: 5,310 square feet
Price per square foot: $489
Indoors: The exterior of the house has elements of classic French Normandy style, popular in Southern California during the 1920s, including a rounded central tower with a conical roof, flanked by two wings.
A stone footpath leads to the front door, which matches the green shutters on several windows. The circular foyer has a curving staircase with a wrought-iron banister leading to the second level.
To the right of the foyer is the formal living room, which has low ceilings with exposed beams. A fireplace with a marble frame and white wooden mantel anchors the room. This space connects to the family room, which has two fireplaces, original built-in bookshelves and crown moldings. The living and family rooms open to an enclosed patio.
To the left of the foyer is a formal dining room with built-in mirrors. A butler’s pantry connects the dining room to the kitchen and a breakfast room with Spanish-tile floors. Beyond the breakfast room is a guest bedroom with an en suite bathroom that has a combination shower and tub.
There are four bedrooms on the second level, including two guest rooms large enough to hold queen-size beds, connected by a pink-tiled bathroom. A third bedroom has access to a rear-facing balcony and a full bathroom that can also be reached from the hallway. The master suite has a separate dressing area with a built-in vanity, as well as a bathroom with a combination tub and shower.
Outdoor space: In addition to the enclosed brick-paved patio, which has an original brick fountain, there is a smaller patio that faces the pool. A guesthouse on the other side of the pool has a full bathroom. The detached garage has space for four cars.
