Molly Burnett leaves ‘SVU’ after 1 season, less than year on the show

Spoiler alert: The following contains details from the crossover finale for Season 24 of “Law & Order: SVU” and Season 3 of “Organized Crime.”

Molly Burnett, who joined “Law & Order: SVU” just last year, is leaving the show, USA TODAY confirmed Friday.

Burnett played Detective Grace Muncy, who worked on a Bronx gang unit and was brought in to help Captain Benson’s team solve a rape and murder case. Muncy’s exit was made clear after she was given a promotion and left Benson’s team during Thursday’s season finale.

Burnett’s departure comes just months after the shocking exit of longtime cast member Kelli Giddish, who left the show last December during the midseason finale of Season 24. Giddish played Detective Amanda Rollins and had been a part of the show for 11 seasons.

The actress briefly returned to “SVU” for an appearance in the Season 24 finale, where her character also revealed she was pregnant.

In August, Giddish, 42, announced her mid-season departure, describing the role of Detective Rollins in an Instagram post as “one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life… She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

In her midseason finale departure, Giddish’s character exchanged vows in a surprise courtroom wedding with love interest Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, played by Peter Scanavino.
