Nicolas Cage remembers being in mom’s womb, he tells Stephen Colbert

Nicolas Cage just won the most far-out answer ever to the question, what’s your earliest memory?

Cage, 59, said Tuesday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” that his memories go back to his time in his mother’s womb, or in utero. It might be the out-there Hollywood star’s most Nic Cage statement ever.

“Listen, I know this sounds really far out and I don’t know if it’s real or not, but sometimes I think I can go all the way back to in utero and feeling like I could see faces in the dark or something,” Cage told amused “Late Show” host Colbert. “I know that sounds powerfully abstract, but that somehow seems like it maybe happened.”

Nicolas Cage went far out with Stephen Colbert.

When Colbert tried to press where the faces were coming from as seen from the womb, Cage could only guess. Cage’s mother, dancer Joy Vogelsang, died at age 85 in May 2021.

“Now that I am no longer in utero, I would have to imagine it was perhaps vocal vibrations resonating through to me at that stage,” he said. “That’s going way back. I don’t know. That comes to mind.”

Cage was on fire during Colbert’s questionnaire. Among his other responses:

What happens when you die? “Oh, wow. Nobody really knows, I don’t know. They say that electricity is forever eternal. That the spark keeps going. I like to think whatever spark is animating our bodies, once the body passes on, that the spark continues to go. But whether or not that electricity has consciousness or not, who can really say?”

Scariest animal? “The centipede. Look at it. They’re important, they help the Earth, But they are scary, and they are very vicious in the natural realm. The way they eat crickets is like a garbage disposal with the mandibles.”
